Linen is originally referred to as a type of yarn or fabric made from a certain type of fiber. Presently, the term linen is already used as the generic term to refer to a class of woven fabrics used to make bed, bath, kitchen and table covers.
In the past, linen fabric is used to cover mummies because it is considered as a symbol of purity. Currently, this type of fabric is used to make bed covers and table cloths. Linen is so good to touch due to its smooth feel on the skin making it a comfortable bed cover. Bed linen is often used by people who want to keep a cool and smooth feeling while they sleep. Table linen, on the other hand, offers high absorbance making it suitable to be used in the kitchen.
Another advantage of using linens is that they are easy to wash and clean. Simple washing by hand or a gentle machine cycle could be enough to remove the dirt in the fabrics and washing them make them even softer and smoother. However, linens should be rinsed well because this could cause discoloration of the fabric due to oxidation of cellulose by the soap residue.
When linens are dried flat or tumbled at low heat, linens do not always require ironing. If ironing the fabric is desired, it is best to iron the linen while the fabric is still damp.
Keeping the linens in the closet is easier too. It is important that the linens be washed first before keeping them. It is best to hang them and keep them unfolded to refrain from damaging the flatness and smoothness of the fabric. Just remember to keep the place where the linens are stored clean, or else mildew could grow on it!
